Prose + Postpartum Hair

Lots of stuff changes after you have a baby. A full night of sleep feels like a fond memory-something you think you remember but can’t really be sure. You’re constantly covered in spit-up, pee, and worse. And that’s not even mentioning your body.

Oh my gosh your body. It grows this tiny life for 9 months and then pushes out that not-feeling-so-tiny-anymore baby. And wow, childbirth does a number on your body. More on that later. But then SURPRISE 4 months later, just when you think you’ve got this mom thing down and your body is starting to remember how to function, your HAIR STARTS FALLING OUT.

And I’m not talking about like a few strands here and there. It’s like you could start knitting sweaters with the amount that’s coming out. Seriously. The number of times I jumped thinking that there was a mouse in the corner of my house only to realize it was a hair ball (*blech, gag*) reached double digits. It was both gross and depressing.

I didn’t know what to do. There didn’t seem to be anything that could help. In desperation, I signed up for a personal profile with Prose Haircare and went through the questionnaire they provided to give me an ulta-personal hair concoction. I was skeptical at first but the further I went, the more I felt like they actually understood what my hair needed. Some of the questions went like this (disclaimer: the actual wording of their questions is so much prettier. This is just how my post-partum mind read them):

“How much scalp can you see?” —Uh, too much. Please help me get my hair back.

“Do you have dandruff? What does it look like?”—Ugh. Gross and yes. Nothing I use gets rid of it except for this shampoo that smells like pure tar.

“Does your hair soak up smells like food?—Yes! Now this is getting weird. How did you know that?

It also asked me about my lifestyle (I workout daily), where I lived, and what my hair goals were. Then, they built a custom formula that addressed my needs and took into account my lifestyle choices and environmental factors. I crossed my fingers and checked my mailbox daily until it arrived.

Then, bless the heavens above, it arrived and the packaging was GORGEOUS. Like embossed lettering on the bottle gorgeous.

It came with a hair mask (which was not like a normal hair mask but actually something you put on before you shampoo to open up your hair follicles), shampoo and conditioner and I was so excited I took them right to the shower and tried them out.

First things first. My formula smells AMAZING. Even my husband who doesn’t like the smell of anything ‘girly’ walked by the bathroom and was like “Wow, what is that smell? It smells amazing!” (My mom made almost the exact same comment a month later!)

But who cares what something smells like if it doesn’t work right? Right. Here were my top three problems that I really wanted to fix:

  1. Problem: My hair was falling out. #somuchhair

    1. Result: After a month, I noticed a significant difference in the amount of hair that was falling out! Also, my hair looked healthier than it ever had. It had the perfect amount of wave.

  2. Problem: Dandruff. Changing hormones gave me yucky dandruff that I couldn’t get rid of.

    1. Result: Even if these products did nothing else, their ability to get rid of my dandruff naturally and with a formula that didn’t smell horrific made them 1000% worth it to me. Totally flake and build-up free after 1 wash!

  3. Problem: My hair soaks up smells. Like gross cooking smells. My hair will smell like that until I wash it again.

    1. Result: This was the FIRST TIME EVER my husband has complimented how my hair smells. And this was after I had cooked shrimp in my kitchen. Seriously amazing!

Overall, what I have to say is that Prose has convinced me to invest in good quality hair care. The price is a bit hard to swallow but it surprisingly lasts a long time and they are so thoughtful about creating a product that fits your specific needs and gives you personalized results. So honestly, it’s something you should seriously consider investing in. To fill out your own personalized hair profile you can click here.
